Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
In March 2023, Project Synapse hosted an event at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA). Students from the Minorities for Medicine and International Youth Neuroscience Association clubs attend the event to learn about neuroscience and neurosurgery.
The event began with a presentation by Dr. Aruna Ganju, introducing students to neuroscience and neurosurgery. At the end of the presentations, students heard from Mr. Neels de Coning, a previous patient of Dr. Ganju’s. Mr. de Coning highlighted his experience suffering from a cervical spinal cord injury and his journey relearning how to move his body, walk and regain normal function. From Ms. Danielle Gordon, students learned about the ways that they can use their breath to modulate their autonomic nervous system, applying the science to real life. Afterwards, Dr. Aaron Palmer and Rya Muller taught students about their reflexes and how to test them. Lastly, Dr. Palmer shared his journey to medicine with the students, highlighting how it is possible for anyone to overcome challenges and pursue their dream of being a physician.
