SciHigh
In the summer of 2023, Project Synapse collaborated with SciHigh, a Northwestern Medicine summer science and medicine program for underrepresented students. Throughout the program, students attend lectures on various science and medicine topics, three of which were presented by Project Synapse.
In the first lecture, students were given an overview of neuroscience, including the different careers that one can pursue in the field. Additionally, students learned about the brain, specifically focusing on the anatomy and important functions. In the second lecture, students learned about the spinal column and cord. During this lecture, students had the opportunity to go through surgical cases, learning about different imaging modalities and diagnoses. Lastly, students were able to consolidate all that they had learned through the neurological exam. The neurological exam is used by physicians to evaluate the function of a patient’s nervous system. Students learned about the different components of the exam, and had the opportunity to test each other’s reflexes.
